Taking reliable field notes without a network

Page updated

The essentials

Without a network, everything depends on what you do before leaving and on your habits on site: download what you will need while you still have Wi-Fi, use a tool that saves on the device, write things down right away with date and place, and keep a copy off the phone.

Before you leave, while you still have a network

  • Pick an app that works fully offline, not just “cached”.
  • Download maps, documents and models (transcription, dictation) you will need in advance.
  • Sync and make a backup before losing the connection.
  • Plan for power: power bank, cable, battery saver.

On site: structure every note

  1. Write it down right away

Write or dictate within minutes: details fade fast.

  2. Date and place it

Date, time, place and who was there. A note template (5W, interview, lab notebook) keeps you from skipping a field.

  3. Separate facts from impressions

What you saw and heard on one side, your interpretation on the other.

  4. Attach the evidence

A photo of a document, a recording (with consent): in the note, not lost in the camera roll.

When you are back

Sync as soon as the connection is reliable, reread with fresh eyes, fill the gaps while memory is fresh, then archive the trip as a single set.

With nTilia

nTilia saves everything on the device: capture, dictation and editing work without a network. A Mission groups a trip’s notes, photos, audio and places, with 5W, interview or lab-notebook templates. “Prepare to leave” runs a sync and a ZIP export of the Mission before you lose the network.

Frequently asked questions

Which notes app really works offline?

One that saves to the device first and syncs later. nTilia, Joplin and Obsidian do; Notion requires making each page available offline in advance.

How do I avoid losing notes without a network?

By keeping a copy off the phone: an export made before leaving, then a sync as soon as the network is back.

Can I dictate without a connection?

Yes, with a dictation or transcription tool that runs on the device, provided you downloaded the model before leaving.
